welcome back, walter

Some coaches motivate you to finish the workout. Others inspire you to think differently about what strength can do for your life.

Walter does both.

We’re thrilled to welcome Walter back to obé with an all-new AMA Strength class—a chance to reconnect with one of our most beloved guest coaches, hear what’s new since his last appearance, and experience the motivating coaching style members have been asking to see again.

Better yet, the timing couldn’t be better. Walter returns with a renewed perspective on strength training, one that’s rooted in simplicity, confidence, and building a body that supports the life you want to live.

A Journey That Started with Himself

Before Walter was coaching thousands of people, he was focused on transforming his own life.

After losing more than 100 pounds, fitness became more than a physical transformation—it became a calling. As a result, that experience sparked a passion for helping others discover what they’re capable of, both inside and outside the gym.

Today, however, his coaching philosophy extends far beyond reps and sets.

“My approach to coaching is centered around mind, body, and spirit. Fitness isn’t just about exercise. It’s about being well.”

Ultimately, his goal is simple: every member should leave class feeling stronger physically, clearer mentally, and better than when they walked in.

Strength Is About More Than Muscle

Ask Walter what strength means, and you won’t hear him start with dumbbells.

Instead, strength is the ability to fully show up for the people and experiences that matter most.

Chase your kids around the park. Travel confidently. Carry groceries without thinking twice. Stay independent as you age. Show up fully for your career, your family, and your purpose.

“Yes, strength is about building muscle, but the bigger purpose is what that strength allows you to do outside of the gym.”

In fact, it’s a philosophy that perfectly aligns with obé’s belief that fitness should enhance your everyday life—not become your entire life.

Why Simple Works

In a fitness world filled with increasingly complicated workouts, Walter believes one of the biggest misconceptions is that strength training has to be complex to be effective.

It doesn’t.

Instead, he focuses on mastering foundational movement patterns—push, pull, squat, hinge, lunge, brace, and carry—before layering on additional challenge. From there, progress comes from gradually increasing the weight, repetitions, tempo, range of motion, or overall difficulty.

“Simple doesn’t mean easy. The goal isn’t to make every exercise look impressive. The goal is to make the body stronger.”

Progressive Overload: The Secret to Getting Stronger

One concept you’ll hear Walter talk about often is progressive overload.

In its simplest form, it’s giving your body a reason to adapt.

For example, that might mean lifting a slightly heavier weight, adding another repetition, improving your range of motion, slowing down your tempo, or simply performing the movement with better control than you did the week before. Over time, those small improvements compound into meaningful strength gains.

Additionally, Walter encourages members not to fear heavier weights.

“You earn the heavier weight through good form, consistency, and progression. We’re not just chasing the feeling of a workout—we’re building a stronger body.”

Don’t Forget Recovery

Walter is quick to remind members that progress doesn’t only happen during the workout.

After all, recovery—through sleep, nutrition, and intentional rest—is just as important as training itself.

“Training provides the stimulus, but your body actually repairs and adapts during recovery.”

Therefore, rather than viewing rest as taking time off, Walter sees it as an essential part of becoming stronger.

If Strength Training Feels Intimidating…

Walter has one piece of advice:

Start.

To make that first step easier, his programming is intentionally built around approachable, foundational movements that help members gain confidence before chasing heavier weights or more advanced exercises. Remember, you don’t need to arrive already strong—you build strength one workout at a time.

Most importantly, he hopes every member leaves class with something even more valuable than sore muscles: confidence.

Trust your body.
Feel ready to pick up a heavier weight.
Realize you’re capable of more than you once believed.
